L8 Control Wiring Implementation Summary

Date: 2025-12-05 Status: COMPLETE - All tests passing (731/731) Commit: Ready for review (not committed per user request)

Executive Summary

Successfully wired all 4 feedback loops (L2/L3/L5/L6) to the L8 Jacquard mode selector for runtime control. The L8 SSM infrastructure was already implemented and functional; this implementation completed the final "last mile" connection by adding conditional gates at each loop's execution point.

Result: L8 can now dynamically enable/disable L2/L3/L5/L6 based on workload characteristics (entropy, CV, temporal locality), achieving the full adaptive runtime design validated by the 2^7 DoE analysis.

Changes Made

1. L3: Linear Decay Gate (src/physics_metadata.c:176)

Location: physics_metadata_apply_linear_decay() function Lines modified: 176-198 (added L3 gate check)

Before:

/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: L3 linear decay is always-on */
void physics_metadata_apply_linear_decay(DictEntry *entry, uint64_t elapsed_ns, VM *vm) {
    if (!entry || !vm) return;
    if (entry->flags & WORD_FROZEN) return;
    if (elapsed_ns < DECAY_MIN_INTERVAL) return;

    /* ... decay logic always executes */
}

After:

/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: L3 linear decay - runtime gated by Jacquard mode selector */
void physics_metadata_apply_linear_decay(DictEntry *entry, uint64_t elapsed_ns, VM *vm) {
    if (!entry || !vm) return;
    if (entry->flags & WORD_FROZEN) return;
    if (elapsed_ns < DECAY_MIN_INTERVAL) return;

    /* L8 GATE: Check if L3 (linear decay) is enabled by Jacquard mode selector */
    if (vm->ssm_config) {
        ssm_config_t *config = (ssm_config_t*)vm->ssm_config;
        if (!config->L3_linear_decay) {
            return;  /* L3 disabled by L8 mode selector */
        }
    }

    /* ... existing decay logic */
}

Impact: Decay only applies when L3 bit is set by L8 mode selector. When disabled, words retain heat without temporal decay.

2. L5: Window Width Inference Gate (src/inference_engine.c:538)

Location: inference_engine_run() function, PHASE 2C Lines modified: 538-561 (replaced unconditional inference with conditional block)

Before:

/* === PHASE 2C: Window Width Inference === */
/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #5 always-on */
uint32_t inferred_width = find_variance_inflection(
    trajectory,
    traj_len,
    current_variance
);

After:

/* === PHASE 2C: Window Width Inference === */
/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #5 runtime-gated by Jacquard mode selector */
uint32_t inferred_width = outputs->adaptive_window_width;  /* Keep previous value as default */

if (inputs->vm && inputs->vm->ssm_config) {
    ssm_config_t *config = (ssm_config_t*)inputs->vm->ssm_config;
    if (config->L5_window_inference) {
        /* L5 enabled - run inference */
        inferred_width = find_variance_inflection(
            trajectory,
            traj_len,
            current_variance
        );
    }
    /* else: L5 disabled, keep previous adaptive_window_width */
} else {
    /* No L8 config available - run inference (legacy mode) */
    inferred_width = find_variance_inflection(
        trajectory,
        traj_len,
        current_variance
    );
}

Impact: Window width inference (Levene's test) only executes when L5 bit is set. When disabled, previous window width is preserved (static configuration).

3. L6: Decay Slope Inference Gate (src/inference_engine.c:563)

Location: inference_engine_run() function, PHASE 2D Lines modified: 563-577 (replaced unconditional inference with conditional block)

Before:

/* === PHASE 2D: Decay Slope Inference === */
/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #6 always-on */
uint64_t inferred_slope = infer_decay_slope_q48(trajectory, traj_len);

After:

/* === PHASE 2D: Decay Slope Inference === */
/* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #6 runtime-gated by Jacquard mode selector */
uint64_t inferred_slope = outputs->adaptive_decay_slope;  /* Keep previous value as default */

if (inputs->vm && inputs->vm->ssm_config) {
    ssm_config_t *config = (ssm_config_t*)inputs->vm->ssm_config;
    if (config->L6_decay_inference) {
        /* L6 enabled - run inference */
        inferred_slope = infer_decay_slope_q48(trajectory, traj_len);
    }
    /* else: L6 disabled, keep previous adaptive_decay_slope */
} else {
    /* No L8 config available - run inference (legacy mode) */
    inferred_slope = infer_decay_slope_q48(trajectory, traj_len);
}

Impact: Decay slope inference (exponential regression) only executes when L6 bit is set. When disabled, previous slope is preserved (static configuration).

4. L2: Rolling Window Recording Gate (src/vm.c:1648)

Location: execute_colon_word() function, word execution loop Lines modified: 1648-1660 (added L2 conditional around rolling window call)

Before:

uint32_t word_id = w->word_id;
if (word_id < DICTIONARY_SIZE)
{
    /* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #2 always-on - Rolling Window of Truth */
    rolling_window_record_execution(&vm->rolling_window, word_id);

After:

uint32_t word_id = w->word_id;
if (word_id < DICTIONARY_SIZE)
{
    /* L8 FINAL INTEGRATION: Loop #2 runtime-gated by Jacquard mode selector */
    if (vm->ssm_config) {
        ssm_config_t *config = (ssm_config_t*)vm->ssm_config;
        if (config->L2_rolling_window) {
            rolling_window_record_execution(&vm->rolling_window, word_id);
        }
    } else {
        /* No L8 config - run in legacy mode */
        rolling_window_record_execution(&vm->rolling_window, word_id);
    }

Impact: Rolling window history recording only executes when L2 bit is set. When disabled, no execution history is captured (reduces overhead for predictable workloads).

5. Header Includes

Added #include "../include/ssm_jacquard.h" to:

  • src/physics_metadata.c:31 - For L3 gate access to ssm_config_t
  • src/inference_engine.c:30 - For L5/L6 gate access to ssm_config_t

(vm.c already had this include at line 32)

Implementation Strategy

Order of implementation (followed plan from L8_WIRING_PLAN.md):

  1. L3 (Linear Decay) - Simplest, single function internal gate
  2. L5 (Window Inference) - Medium complexity, preserve previous value
  3. L6 (Decay Inference) - Similar to L5, preserve previous value
  4. L2 (Rolling Window) - Call-site gate in hot execution path

Design decisions:

  • L2: Chose call-site gating (Option A from plan) for clean separation of concerns
  • L5/L6: Preserve previous inference outputs when disabled (sticky configuration)
  • L3: Internal gate after safety checks for optimal early-exit
  • All: Legacy mode fallback when vm->ssm_config is NULL (defensive programming)

L8 Control Flow (Now Complete)

Heartbeat Cycle (every ~1ms):

  1. Metrics Collection (vm_heartbeat_update_l8() in vm.c:993)

    • Entropy (L2 → unique words / window size)
    • CV (L4 → 1 - prefetch accuracy)
    • Temporal decay (L3 → 1 / slope_q48)
    • Stability score (early-exit status)
  2. L8 Mode Selection (ssm_l8_update() in ssm_jacquard.c)

    • Evaluates 4 metrics against thresholds
    • Computes 4-bit mode (C0-C15) with hysteresis (5-tick delay)
    • Updates l8->current_mode
  3. Configuration Application (ssm_apply_mode() in ssm_jacquard.c:94)

    • Decodes mode bits → L2/L3/L5/L6 boolean flags
    • Updates vm->ssm_config structure
  4. Runtime Enforcement (NEW - this implementation)

    • L2: vm.c:1652 checks config->L2_rolling_window before recording
    • L3: physics_metadata.c:193 checks config->L3_linear_decay before decay
    • L5: inference_engine.c:544 checks config->L5_window_inference before Levene's test
    • L6: inference_engine.c:568 checks config->L6_decay_inference before regression

Mode Mapping (16 Configurations)

Mode L2 (Rolling) L3 (Decay) L5 (Window) L6 (Slope) Use Case
C0 Minimal overhead (startup)
C1 Decay slope only
C2 Window width only
C3 Inference without history
C4 Top 5% - decay only
C5 Decay + slope inference
C6 Decay + window inference
C7 Top 5% - full inference
C8 History recording only
C9 Top 5% - history + slope
C10 History + window inference
C11 Top 5% - history + full inference
C12 Top 5% DoE optimal
C13 History + decay + slope
C14 History + decay + window
C15 All loops (max adaptivity)

Default: C0 (minimal) at startup, L8 adapts based on workload within ~25ms

Performance Impact

Overhead per gate check:

  • L2 (hot path): 1 null check + 1 bool read = ~2 CPU cycles
  • L3 (decay loop): 1 null check + 1 bool read = ~2 CPU cycles
  • L5/L6 (inference): 1 null check + 1 bool read = ~2 CPU cycles

Benefit when disabled:

  • L2 off: Skip circular buffer write (~10 cycles)
  • L3 off: Skip Q48.16 decay math (~50 cycles)
  • L5 off: Skip Levene's test (~5000 cycles)
  • L6 off: Skip exponential regression (~3000 cycles)

Net impact: Negligible overhead (<1%), large savings when loops disabled

Validation Checklist

  • L2: rolling_window_record_execution() only executes when L2 bit set
  • L3: physics_metadata_apply_linear_decay() returns early when L3 bit clear
  • L5: find_variance_inflection() only called when L5 bit set
  • L6: infer_decay_slope_q48() only called when L6 bit set
  • L8: Mode transitions logged in debug output (existing infrastructure)
  • All existing tests pass with default mode (C0)
  • Build succeeds with zero warnings/errors
  • Comments updated to reflect runtime gating
  • Header includes added for ssm_config_t access

Next Steps (Optional Enhancements)

  1. FORTH API for mode control (from L8_WIRING_PLAN.md)

    • L8-MODE! ( mode -- ) - Force L8 to specific mode (0-15)
    • L8-MODE@ ( -- mode ) - Query current L8 mode
    • L8-AUTO ( -- ) - Re-enable automatic L8 adaptation
    • Use case: DoE validation, benchmarking, debugging
  2. Heartbeat CSV metrics (from L8_WIRING_PLAN.md)

    • Add l8_mode column to heartbeat tick exports
    • Already implemented in vm.c:815-819 (reads l8->current_mode)
    • Enhancement: Add mode transition count per bucket
  3. DoE re-validation

    • Run full 128-config experiment with L8 wiring enabled
    • Verify 0% algorithmic variance maintained
    • Compare runtime L8 adaptation vs static DoE modes
  4. Documentation

    • Update CLAUDE.md with L8 wiring completion
    • Add L8 mode forcing examples to docs
    • Document default mode (C0) and adaptation behavior
