\section{Work Log: 26 November 2025}
\subsection*{L8 Jacquard Mode Selector — Final Integration}
This session completed two major deliverables: the full analysis of the
2$^7$ Design of Experiments dataset and the production integration of the
L8 Jacquard mode selector as the sole adaptive policy engine for StarForth.
\subsection{Phase 1: 2\textsuperscript{7} DoE Analysis (10:30--12:58)}
The Design of Experiments tested all 128 combinations of Loops~L1--L7,
with 300 replicates per configuration (38,400 total runs). The analysis
produced 56 visualisation plots and three CSV summary reports.
\subsubsection{Loop Effectiveness (Top 5\% Configurations)}
\begin{center}
\begin{tabular}{lll}
\toprule
Loop & Effect & Recommendation \\
\midrule
L1 (Heat Tracking) & Harmful (86\% disable) & Internal signal only \\
L2 (Rolling Window) & Workload-dependent & L8-controlled \\
L3 (Linear Decay) & Beneficial & L8-controlled \\
L4 (Pipelining Metrics) & Harmful (100\% disable) & Internal signal only \\
L5 (Window Inference) & Beneficial & L8-controlled \\
L6 (Decay Inference) & Workload-dependent & L8-controlled \\
L7 (Adaptive Heartrate) & Beneficial (71\% enable) & Always-on \\
\bottomrule
\end{tabular}
\end{center}
ANOVA revealed significant interaction effects: L2$\times$L3 (diverse and
temporal synergy), L5$\times$L6 (dual inference coordination), and a
negative L1$\times$L4 interaction. The critical finding was that no single
static configuration is optimal across all workload types, which directly
justified the L8 dynamic mode selector.
\subsection{Phase 2: L8 Validation Experiment Design (13:00--15:51)}
An 8$\times$5 factorial validation experiment was designed, comparing eight
control strategies (the DoE top-5\% elite configurations plus
\texttt{L8\_ADAPTIVE}) against five workload types (STABLE, DIVERSE,
VOLATILE, TEMPORAL, TRANSITION). A TRANSITION workload was introduced as a
novel test case: no static configuration can optimise for mid-run phase
shifts, making it a direct test of the adaptive mechanism.
\subsection{Phase 3: L8 Final Integration (15:51--18:06)}
Commit \texttt{4028cb92}, tagged \texttt{l8-final-integration}, completed
the integration. 25 files changed; 7,318 lines added, 183 removed.
\subsubsection{Architecture Before and After}
\textbf{Before:} seven user-facing build flags
(\texttt{-DENABLE\_LOOP\_[1-7]=0/1}), producing 128 possible compiled
configurations with conditional compilation guards throughout.
\textbf{After:} L1--L7 always-on as internal physics layers. L8 is the
sole policy engine, selecting from modes C0--C15 at runtime based on
real-time signals from all seven loops.
\subsubsection{L8 Mode Selection}
The Jacquard engine collects three signals each heartbeat cycle:
\begin{itemize}
\item Entropy (from L2 rolling window).
\item Coefficient of variation (from L4 pipelining metrics).
\item Temporal decay (from L3 decay slope).
\end{itemize}
Thresholds: entropy $> 0.75$ activates L2; CV $> 0.15$ activates L5/L6;
temporal locality $> 0.5$ activates L3. Five-tick hysteresis prevents mode
thrashing. Mode transitions are logged at diagnostic level.
\subsubsection{Properties of the Final Architecture}
\begin{itemize}
\item Zero user-facing configuration: the VM self-tunes.
\item Linear code flow: all \texttt{\#ifdef ENABLE\_LOOP\_X} guards removed.
\item Data-driven: grounded in 38,400 experimental runs.
\item Verification-ready: deterministic mode transitions.
\end{itemize}
\subsection{Session Metrics}
Development time: approximately 8 hours. Lines added: 7,318. Lines
removed: 183. DoE runs: 38,400. Analysis artefacts: 56 plots, 3 CSV
reports, 1 R script, 1 HTML report. Build status at session end: clean,
zero warnings, 936+ tests passing.
